
We all want to keep our children out of harm’s way. It can be overwhelming to keep track of children who seem to be attracted to harm. Preventable accidents are the #1 cause of injuries and death for children under 18.
Here are a few tips for childproofing your home. Also, these tips and suggestions will reduce the hidden dangers in and around the house.
- Electrical safety for kids. Electrical outlets need to be blocked. Chords need to be managed and should be kept bundled in control and hidden.
- Private injury from falls. This can be done by making sure outdoor playground equipment is secure in that booth. Use window guards and window locks around all windows.
- TV and Internet safety for kids. Our responsibility goes beyond the physical we also have to preserve the emotional health of our children. Preview TV shows and movies before your children watch them. Keep television and Internet-connected devices out of children’s bedrooms.
- Consider choking and suffocation safety for children. Babies should go to sleep on their backs and on a firm sleep surface.
- Kitchens are also full of potential hazards. Beware of electrical appliances and unplug all appliances when they are not in use. Use stove knob covers and cook on the back burners whenever possible, especially when you have a young one at home.
These are just a few of many safety measures that need to be taken when children and babies are living in our homes.
