What are dust mites? They are microscopic organisms that can be found in every home. While harmless for the majority of people, for others, dust mites can trigger an allergic reaction that can make a person feel miserable. Can anything be done to eliminate dust mites?

Little can be done to eliminate dust mites altogether but there are some steps you can take to reduce their numbers. A thorough dusting and vacuuming regularly of the home can help to reduce dust mite numbers. Use a slightly damp microfiber cloth to wipe down surfaces and try to use a vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter which will prevent redistribution of dust into the air.
Beds and bed linens are one particular place where dust mites thrive. To help control their numbers, wash bedding at a high temperature (no less than 140 degrees Fahrenheit) or place bedding into a dryer for 10 minutes on high. Dust mites do not survive in high temperatures so it will help to eliminate them.
Keep humidity levels as low as possible. Open windows to provide good ventilation, you might also want to try electric blankets or air conditioners to control humidity.
Air purifiers are good for allergy sufferers, and they can help to eliminate dust mites in the air, however, because dust mites are not generally airborne, they should not be the only method you use.
