If there is a smell to your drinking water, should that be a concern? The answer is: maybe. Unfortunately, a smell alone will not help you to identify problems with your drinking water. In fact, many of the most dangerous problems with drinking water will not alter the smell enough to be noticed by a human nose, and on the flip-side, many bad smells have no harmful effects.
Even though there is no danger to your health with some smells, they usually make the water unappealing to drink.
If your water smells like rotten eggs, for example, you would most likely not want to drink it, but the smell probably comes from hydrogen sulfide in your water which is not going to harm you. It is, however, possible that you have higher levels of hydrogen sulfide because of a high level of pollution or chemicals. If you want to be on the safe side, you can have your water checked to make sure that everything is alright.
